The enhanced audio engine improves fidelity with bit mix summing, POW-r dithering, optimized sample-rate conversion and other advances.
The new compressor device integrates three compression models, one of which is based on a feedback design commonly found in the most praised vintage compressors. Fully integrated side-chaining capability is available for the new Compressor as well as Gate and Auto Filter. High-Quality modes have been added to Operator, Dynamic Tube and Saturator for anti-aliased processing, reducing typical “digital” artifacts.
EQ Eight has an improved user interface and a 64 bit mode for increased accuracy. The new Spectrum analyzer provides visual feedback for any audio signals within Live and it looks really cool!
Hardware integration has been streamlined–hardware synthesizers and effects can now be inserted into device chains just like software plug-ins. New memory management technology allows users of large sample libraries, such as Ableton’s new sampled instruments or third-party libraries imported via Sampler, to run an impressive number of instruments at the same time. This happens automatically, with no setup changes required.
New Audio and MIDI fact sheets explain exactly how signals are or are not being modified when using specific features in Live and provide tips for achieving the highest quality results. Live 7 brings the features most frequently requested by our users.
Time signature changes can be inserted in the Arrangement timeline and tied to Session scenes. Warped and unwarped video can be exported to files. Multiple automation lanes per track can be displayed and edited at the same time. A new “tempo nudge” function makes it easier to synchronize to live musicians or DJs. Live, Operator and Sampler have received many small improvements and additions based on users’ requests. A familiar drum pad interface allows dragging and dropping of samples, instruments and effects.
Every pad can have its own Sampler, Simpler, Operator, or any other virtual instrument or plug-in, and its own individual effects chain. The original sequence is represented as a MIDI clip, making it easy to replace, reshuffle or re-record the events and process them individually.
A Drum Rack can have its own sends, returns and sub-mixes. Every pad can be shown as a mixer channel in the Session View. Each drum can be dragged out of its rack for isolated pattern control and editing. The instruments integrate tightly with Live, both in terms of workflow and resource management.

VST effect plugins can smoothly introduce any preset effect on track easily, such as pan, reverb, or delay which can modify the overall tone and outlook of the songs.
Rather than generating their own sounds, the VST effects tweak and alter the existing sounds with the application of various sound effects. VSTs can generate sounds similar to instruments such as keyboards, drums, or guitars. The VSTs simulate music like it is produced from real instruments or synthesizers. In terms of cost-effectiveness and space efficiency, the use of VSTs is considered a great option for many. Since not everyone can invest in high-priced and sophisticated instruments due to financial constraints or lack of studio space, the VSTs installed on your DAW are the perfect alternative to the physical hardware.
Now you know the step-by-step process of how to use them in your project. The best way to learn about the different types of VST plugins is to get started with the basics, which you have done by reading this article. The next step would be for you to download these plugins and see what works for you!
The wide availability of the VST plugins can easily make or break your music. A monotonous, boring track can be glammed up with the right addition of effects and variation. However, a really good track can lose its charm and likeability if plugins are mashed together badly. Brian Clark is a multi-instrumentalist and music producer. IRCAM has used the expertise from decades of dedicated research and development to produce this collection of Max for Live devices. One thing still missing, though, is the ability to send program changes other than from within a MIDI clip, but this is flagged for future attention by the developers.
The new External Audio Effect device lets you create a physical insert point. If you Freeze a track containing one of these devices, Live performs a real-time bounce to capture the audio. This doubles as a really simple way to print all your outboard effects if you move a project to a different location. Time signature changes and multiple automation lanes in the Arrangement. Time signature changes are added to Session scenes by simply including them in their names.
In the same way that tempo changes are handled, you just need to change the name of a scene in the Master track to include the time signature. Live automatically recognises this, and makes the change when you launch the clip. If you have the Arrangement in record when you launch such a clip, a signature-change marker is placed into the time ruler — a simple and elegant solution. Another useful new feature is the ability to display and work with multiple lanes of automation from a single track.
Each extra graph that you choose to view is stacked above the previous one. The lanes can be re-ordered and individually resized. Pressing the plus button on the main track lane pushes the automation graph from that track down to a new lane. This is a slightly awkward way of doing it, but it avoids every lane needing a view selector. Apart from the audio engine overhaul, there are some other mixing enhancements. You can call up either of the original models, or a brand new feedback model.
The new algorithm mimics the kind of expensive vintage compressors that we all hanker after. I absolutely loved it. If you want to give a creamy-smooth, warm boost to drums, without adding punch, this is perfect. Very short release times produce a nice harmonic saturation. On synths and vocals it can smooth out levels, or completely flat-line them without distorting or pumping. As well as EQ side-chaining, you can now side-chain Compressor from an external signal.
Side-chaining has also been added to the Gate device, and to the envelope follower in Auto Filter, both of which open up new creative possibilities. If you use Live for composition, especially if you program your own drums, the Drum Rack alone will make the upgrade too tempting to pass up.
Personally, as someone who uses Live for composition more than performance, the External Instrument device with its Freeze support is particularly pleasing, especially for Rewiring with Reason instruments.
The instruments and drum libraries make Live a more rounded package. Live continues to mature as an all-round platform for composition and production, as well as a performance tool.
There are still things that other packages do better, such as MIDI manipulation and fully fledged automation, but I, for one, am glad that Ableton focus their development on finding elegant and intuitive alternatives to working methods that most of the other DAWs do in the same way as each other. Pricing varies depending on which version you upgrade from. For users of any version of Live including Live Lite and Live LE, there will be attractively priced introductory offers for Live 7 and various combinations of instruments.
